Learn how to make Tofu Waffles for a quick, easy, and fun meal! You can add waffle tofu to salads, dip it like fries, or use it to make a sandwich.
Have you ever thought of cooking tofu in a waffle iron?
Well, it’s a great way to cook up some extra crispy tofu in under 10 minutes.
That’s from out of the package and onto your plate!
The key is microwaving your slabs of tofu first. That way, you get an extra crispy, golden brown tofu waffle.
One of my favorite ways to use it is to make sandwiches! Add arugula pesto and sliced tomato, and you will have a delicious lunch.
Ingredients
To make tofu waffles, all you need is tofu! Make sure to use firm or extra-firm tofu, not silken tofu.
I tested this recipe with and without oil. Oil is unnecessary as long as you use a nonstick waffle iron. The tofu will turn out crispy either way!
When waffling tofu, I find it best to cook it without any seasonings. Otherwise, it might burn in the waffle maker. Instead, leave the seasonings and toppings for after it’s cooked.
Please refer to the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and detailed instructions.
Equipment
I tested this recipe using a Dash mini waffle maker. You can use any type of waffle maker, a larger waffle iron will help the cooking time go by faster if you’re looking to cook multiple waffles simultaneously.
You will also need a heavy object, such as a pan or a pot, to weigh down the waffle maker and compress the slab of tofu into a waffle shape.
Instructions
Here's a step by step guide to waffling tofu:
- Step 1: Cut your tofu into a square, then slice it into ½” thick slabs.
- Step 2: Microwave the tofu slabs for 1 minute and blot off any excess water with a towel.
- Step 3: Place the tofu into a preheated waffle iron. Close the lid and place a heavy pan on top.
- Step 4: Cook the tofu for about 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining tofu slabs.
Top Tips
Shaping the tofu will depend on the size of your waffle maker. For the Dash mini waffle maker, a square shape that is ½” thick works best. But for a larger waffle maker, you may need to cut thicker slabs to fill all the crevices of the waffle iron.
Microwaving the tofu helps dry out the tofu slabs, reducing the time in the waffle maker. This also means you don’t have to wait to press the tofu!
Keeping the lid closed allows the tofu to form a crust and come out of the waffle iron without sticking. Use a heavy pan to make sure the waffle maker stays closed!
Tofu Waffle Sandwich
Once you have two tofu waffles, you can make a sandwich! Here’s my go-to waffled tofu sandwich combination:
- Layer pesto on top of the tofu waffle.
- Add a layer of thinly sliced tomatoes.
- Season the tomato with pink salt and black pepper.
- Add the other waffle with more pesto on top. Slice the sandwich in half and enjoy!
Other Ways to Serve
Here are a few more ways for how to enjoy your waffles tofu:
- To dip - Try dipping them in ketchup, vegan bang bang sauce, or homemade ranch.
- On a salad - Add them to vegan kale salad or caesar salad.
- In a quinoa bowl - Make a bowl along with lemony quinoa and roasted veggies.
- With actual waffles - Add them to your breakfast spread, along with some vegan bisquick waffles or protein powder waffles.
- Like avocado toast - Slice up some avocado and sprinkle on everything but the beagle seasoning for a morning snack.
FAQ
Tofu waffles can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about a week.
To reheat them, bake them at 350°F for 5 to 10 minutes in the oven or 3 to 5 minutes in the air fryer.
